BOOK

An open-source artist's book tracing the binary footprints of an exiled wanderer and Belgian-made pixels over the course of a seven-year digital odyssey

awalkaday 251-2022

Synopsis

This artist's book documents the development and growth of awalkaday from its conception in 2017 to its conclusion in 2024. The book's pages are bound with the git-based digital footprints of the photo series, creating a narrative that's as much about the medium as the message.

A unique blend of digital art forms—black-and-white photography, open-source code, social media posts, and non-fungible blockchain tokens—comes together with third-person narration to create an autobiographical work of creative nonfiction. Together, these elements illustrate and trace the history of a photographic odyssey across a range of public spaces and computing platforms.

It is a companion piece to a collection of 263 photographs taken during regular walks in Belgium, Europe. A book that concludes a long-term project by an exiled artist and pioneers a novel approach to publishing digital art. By virtue of the artistic medium, all of the drafts and years of changes are baked into this online edition.
